The "One Laptop Per Child" project has a great device ready to ship, but there's no Java on there. Let's think about working together to put Java on OLPC!
About a year ago, BEA development manager Tim Wagner took over the reins of the troubled Web Tools Platform project with the mandate to whip WTP into shape and get it out the door. The fruit of that effort, WTP version 1.0, is
now available for download
. Recently I spoke with Tim about this daunting project and his plans for the future. Get a peek inside the development process of WTP and learn how a company like BEA balances commercial and open source development. Here's an excerpt:
At BEA we don't have a pure commercial/open source team split, in part because we believe that knowledge about each of these areas facilitates work in the other camp. Like Eclipse/WTP, we have a distributed organization, so we're used to working with different groups around the world; Eclipse development just made for more sites and more development diversity...
Re: EZ Interviews: Tim Wagner, Web Tools project leader
Hi,
Reading the interview with Tim that was also mentioned shortly before Christmas I think there is a little "time warp" in the sentence:
"BEA joined the project in February of 2006, which was the start of my involvement with the PMC."
If "joined" is history, then it cannot be later than 2005, they joined it?
Re: EZ Interviews: Tim Wagner, Web Tools project leader
Not sure why Tim did not mention NitroX, an excellent JSP, Struts, JSF eclispe plugin purchased by BEA last year (around Oct). In my opinion, NitroX provides 70% of the capabilities. WTP does not provide the application scanning technology and visual JSP editor provided with NitroX. Not sure what would become of this plug-in and Workshop.
Re: EZ Interviews: Tim Wagner, Web Tools project leader
Hi Tim,
WTP effort is gift to Java /j2EE community. I do small research in evaluating different IDE tools(J2EE space). The main concern that I face today is about server runtimes. When I downloaded WTP1.0, It contains server runtimes for websphere 6.0. I recently involved in a migration project where I need to migrate from webphere 4.0 to websphere 5.1. But I could not have use WTP with eclipse. ( since it does not contain server runtime. )
My main concern is Sun have released J2EE 1.3 Reference Implementation Server J2EE SDK 1.3.1 RI. This server is very stable and few organization I worked are hosted applications using RI. So I request to provide a way to build a server runtime for old versions of servers that are based on J2EE1.3.1 specification. Thanks for the information provided at eclipse zone. I once again thank to every one working directly or indirectly for eclipse and WTP developers for the effort in providing tool. I finally thank to Javalobby and Rick Ross providing imformative weely newsletters.
