The Rich Engineering Heritage Behind Dependency Injection

Andrew McVeigh takes us on a tour of the rich heritage behind dependency injection, what it represents, and tells us why its here to stay.

Java, the OLPC, and community responsibility

The "One Laptop Per Child" project has a great device ready to ship, but there's no Java on there. Let's think about working together to put Java on OLPC!

Is it possible to use the bugzilla integration to build a mylar filter and somehow attach it to a bug in bugzilla? I think this would be nifty when assigning bugs.

I'm not positive if that is in *yet*, but the author of Mylar is working like a mad man and is constantly making releases. I also know that functionality was buzzing around the mouths of people at EC, so he's well aware of it and probably already working on it.

My guess is that if it's not in now, it may be soon.

Actually they are working on a way to attach the mylar context to a bug. So that anyone can recreate the original mylar context. (Not sure if this is in yet since I don't use that feature yet)

By the way anyone who hasn't tried mylar yet should definitely do so cause it will revolutionize the way you work with eclipse (no kidding)

Every developer I've talked to that has seen/used it has had this response. It's like candy to a baby ;)

Is there any plans from Mylar to support IBM (Rational) ClearQuest bug tracking system?

While ClearQuest integration is not currently planned we are happy to support others building this support on the Mylar Tasks framework. To help us track interest in a ClearQuest Connector please add an enhancement request by following instructions at the bottom of: http://www.eclipse.org/mylar/start.php

Fyi, regarding Daniel's above inquiry about attaching contexts to Bugzilla reports, that wasn't there when this article was written but is now available in Mylar 0.5.1: http://www.eclipse.org/mylar/doc/new.php

Re: Introduction to Mylar

Just a word of caution. I have installed Mylar I belive 0.41 or 0.43 and I could not debug Eclipse plugins any more. Was that fixed or is it still an issue? In general Mylar is great idea and already has greate fetures, but consider it pre-alpha, alpha release. (in other words, ff something stops working in Eclipse IDE, first try to uninstall/remove Mylar). That said, I think Mik does great job, and I am brave enough to instal 0.51 again and try if I can debug plugins 8-).

Re: Introduction to Mylar

Lubos, while Mylar is still evolving rapidly, there have been no reports of it preventing debugging from working, or anything else nearly so drastic. I do recall responding your comment about this (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=114956#c13) but that provided no steps to reproduce or evidence of Mylar being the culprit. We've had eight releases since then, so if you do end up installing the latest please do submit a bug report if you experience any problems with debugging or otherwise.

That said, I do think that sharing words of caution is a good idea. So whenever we come across any user reported problem or confusion that we can't address with a fix or enhancement we always put a note in the FAQ, and I suggest checking that if encountering any install or other problems of this sort: http://www.eclipse.org/mylar/doc/faq.php

Re: Introduction to Mylar

Mik,
I (and I bet many other Java developers) very, very appreciate the work you and others are doing with Mylar!
It is quite a new concept and it is great. I did installed 0.51 and I have no problem debugging the plugin I am working on any more. So the problem I had with 0.43 has been fixed, or it was some strange thing with my Eclipse env. or combination of plugins?! Who know. Anyway I am glad that I can use Mylar again!!

Re: Introduction to Mylar

Mik,

I do have one serious problem with Mylar. When I select Apply Mylar button in Package Explorer or Navigator or Outline views, the whole contents of the view (like projects, files etc.) disappears. When I deselect Apply Mylar button, the information (like in case of Navigator or Package Explorer projects, folders, packages etc.) is back.
Is it something wrong with my env. Should I cleanup/reset something?

Never mind 8-), pilot error!
It only happens if you do not have any active task and that make sense in this context (no task so nothing to show). So you have to create and activate a task to have Mylar highlighting and show/hide feature active.
