The "One Laptop Per Child" project has a great device ready to ship, but there's no Java on there. Let's think about working together to put Java on OLPC!
How did you first get involved with Eclipse, and how long ago?
I was working on a Java-based UI framework called JFace in 1999 when the work started on Eclipse. I joined the original platform UI team and had a pleasure of breaking new ground in many areas that are now mainstream Eclipse. I had a chance to break the new ground twice since then - by creating a new component called PDE and introducing a web-like SWT UI in PDE that has since been spun off into what we now know as UI Forms.
What Eclipse-related projects are you working on and what are you doing?
My Toronto team is responsible for such great Eclipse components as PDE, User Assistance and UI Forms. I am personally the UA component lead and hacking the UI Forms when I can hide from people that are after me. I am also available to the PDE team as a sage although most of the time I am trying not to bother them since they seem to be doing just fine without me.
What's your favourite Eclipse feature that you've added?
While PDE is dear to my heart as a concept, UI Forms are my sweet spot due to the mileage I got out of what is a relatively simple code.
What's your favourite feature/plugin (commercial or open source)?
I don't normally download third-party plug-ins - I use regular integration builds for my development needs. Since I refactor my code a lot, every time I do it I remember the old days when we had to fix hundreds of compile errors on Java type renames. At those times I thinks nice thoughts about the JDT team and the fantastic refactoring code that we now take for granted.
What OSes do you do development on?
My machine runs a Windows XP Pro. However, we have a small lab nearby where we run a mix of Linux (SuSE and Red Heat) and Mac machines for testing. In 3.3, we also have a Vista machine we use to make sure we look good on it.
Are you attending EclipseCon or giving a talk this year?
What do you get up to in life when you're not thinking about or working with Eclipse?
In my former life I had a band so I like to remember those days and play the guitar or the piano whenever I can. I am also a SCUBA fan but can only do that on my Caribbean vacations due to my lack of enthusiasm for frigid Canadian waters.
Lastly, how do you see yourself in the Eclipse community, and why should people vote for you?
Ever since Jeff McAffer and myself connected the first core and UI prototypes and got the file from the navigator to open into an editor area, my work has been revolving around Eclipse. Between the code that is still living in the Platform UI, various PDE areas, User Assistance features such as the dynamic view, and of course the UI Forms, you are running my code every time you run Eclipse (I am not sure that is a good or a bad thing, but it's a fact). By voting for me, you will be simply acknowledging this long track record of contribution to the Platform project. Finally, you will be recognizing the impact that UI Forms made on your ability to make the modern and sexy UIs while still being good JFace/SWT citizens.
EclipseZone would like to thank those that took part, and please remember to
vote for the individual awards
prior to the closing date of February 16th 2007.

Yes, I will be giving a short tutorial on Forms ( UI Forms: I can't believe it's not browser ) and will participate in the User Assistance panel ( How We Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Eclipse User Assistance! ).
