The Rich Engineering Heritage Behind Dependency Injection

Andrew McVeigh takes us on a tour of the rich heritage behind dependency injection, what it represents, and tells us why its here to stay.

Java, the OLPC, and community responsibility

The "One Laptop Per Child" project has a great device ready to ship, but there's no Java on there. Let's think about working together to put Java on OLPC!

ECF Skype provider in the works

At 6:32 PM on Apr 18, 2007, Alex Blewitt DeveloperZone Top 100 wrote:

Scott Lewis announced on the Eclipse Communication Framework newsgroup a plan to provide a Skype provider that allows communication to integrate with an existing Skype instance. It won't be long before you can drive your Skype chats from inside Eclipse.

The Eclipse Communication Framework project aims to provide communication facilities (both for human and programmatic consumption); the project site describes it as:

ECF is a framework for supporting the development of distributed Eclipse-based tools and applications. It can be used to create other plugins, tools, or full Eclipse RCP applications that require asynchronous point-to-point or publish-and-subscribe messaging.

ECF also provides an open distributed component model based upon the Equinox runtime, along with a growing set of extensible communications components. All APIs, components, and ECF protocol providers may be reused, extended, or replaced by developers.

To test and demonstrate the framework, the committers and other community members have built applications with features such as user presence and instant messaging, multi-user chat, file sharing, co-browsing, shared drawing/whiteboard, and real-time collaborative editing.

What you may not know is that it also supports a variety of IM protocols, including Jabber (which is used by Google Talk and many other open-source communication servers).

For more information on the Skype plugin, look at the wiki page . EclipseZone has previously published an interview with Scott Lewis about ECF, though it's come along further since that was published.

Do you use ECF on a daily basis inside Eclipse? If not, why not?

Because its UI is still not quite ready for daily usage.

This is Eugene's opinion only.

There are people that use it on a daily basis with google talk/IRC/and xmpp accounts.

The ECF project will host IM accounts and chat rooms for any Eclipse project team upon request to ecf-dev at eclipse dot org. The ECF client can be used with these accounts, and/or other clients can be used if desired (GAIM, etc).

Re: ECF Skype provider in the works

We've made available a dev release of the Skype provider. See the following announcement:

Hi Folks,

I've produced a dev build today (Tues April 24, 2007) for both the ECF core features and the ECF Extras, which are hosted at OSUOSL.

The core build can be accessed at

http://www.eclipse.org/ecf/downloads.php.
Update site: http://download.eclipse.org/technology/ecf/update

ECF Extras (including the new Skype Provider [1]) can be accessed at

http://ecf1.osuosl.org/
Update site: http://ecf1.osuosl.org/update

Note that the Skype provider is only currently tested with win32 and is still in pre-release state.

Thanks,

Scott

Hey Alex. What OS do you have? Reason...Marcelo Mayworm is currently working to get the Skype4Java native code going on macos and having some trouble with the native code. I can't help him very much, as I don't have access to mac myself. Would you be willing to help him/and try out on your mac? His Skype name is 'mayworm' and his email is mayworm at gmail dot com.

Or if you have linux I did add the linux fragment but haven't tested it yet (it's actually in the dev build, but like I said I have no idea if it will work). Perhaps if you are running linux you could help with that instead.

I'll see what I can do, but I only get time at weekends and evenings to try this sort of stuff. I've got a PPC Mac to try it out on, though come to think of it, I've recently hooked up an intel Mac that I might be able to give it a go.

I'll touch base with Marcelo to see how I can help.

Alex.

PS I thought everyone knew I used Macs ;-)

Thanks (and inadvance).

It *is* a major faux pas given Alex's 'flaming macness' :) Sorry.
